There’s something romantic and relaxing about sitting by an open fire outdoors, with the heat blushing our cheeks and sound of kindling cracking and crumbling beneath the dance of the flames.
At The Lily Pad, the firepit is located in the centre of the food forest, overlooking the rolling horse paddock and flanked by edible gardens. It’s a permanent pit, surrounded by two layers of sandstone and four teak armchairs, located just a short distance from the Studio pavilion.
We recently cooked a whole home-grown pumpkin in a camp oven over the fire pit. After scraping out the seeds, we filled the core with chick peas, coconut milk and coriander and roasted until tender and fragrant. Amazing!
We’ve also been known to cook spanner crabs over the fire pit and sit quietly watching the stars appear in the sky.
